  10.  AB    OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this survey was to obtain data regarding
  11.        awareness and knowledge of HIV transmission via semen among physicians
  12.        in Mizoram, India. METHODS: A survey questionnaire was distributed among
  13.        41 physicians, 24 males and 17 females. The major focus of this
  14.        questionnaire was to obtain data on their understanding regarding HIV in
  15.        semen. RESULTS: Seventeen percent male and 7% female physicians felt
  16.        that HIV is not present in the semen of an infected person. Fifty
  17.        percent males and 28% females felt that semen is not the most common
  18.        source of HIV infection after sexual intercourse with an infected
  19.        individual. The majority of male (69%) and female (86%) physicians felt
  20.        that vaginal fluid of an infected person is not a common source of HIV
  21.        transmission. Eighty-eight percent males and 75% females felt that HIV
  22.        in semen should be a high priority area of research in Mizoram.
  23.        According to these physicians, education and research on HIV in semen is
  24.        essential in Mizoram. CONCLUSION: Due to geographical location, Mizoram
  25.        is in a vulnerable position to have more HIV infected persons.
  26.        Therefore, knowledge regarding all aspects of HIV/AIDS among health care
  27.        workers is critical in Mizoram. This survey clearly shows that further
  28.        knowledge on HIV in semen and its mode of transmission is required.
  29.        Therefore, this should be a high priority research and education area in
  30.        Mizoram.
